Acanthus Mollis (also known as wild rhubarb, bears breeches)
This plant has lovely large shiny leaves which make an architectural show.
The tall flower spires are ivory white and purple or slightly pink bracts and appear October – November (spring time) and are a long-lasting cut flower that also dries well.
This plant dies back completely in Autumn and during winter, to appear again the following Spring.
Excellent to plant in dry shade. Although if no water is given, the plants also disappear, thus being relatively drought hardy.

Aechmea gamosepala (matchstick bromeliad)

Aechmea gamosepela, the ‘matchstick bromeliad’ has mid-green leaves with rounded tips. It reaches a height of approx 30cm.
Endemic to southern Brazil.It produces spikes topped with pink flowers with blue tips. Once open, the blue tips reveal pink flowers with a blue throat.

Blackberry (Rubus Allegheniensis) plant in a 19cm diameter (3L pot)
This rubus plant is an upright growing, semi-self supporting shrub which should be placed in full sun or partly shade. It differs from Rubus Fruticosus which has thorns. It prefers well drained, light sandy or sandy-loam soils with a ph level between 5.8 and 6.8 (KCl). Well decomposed compost should preferably worked into the soil before planting. It bears edible berries which can be used for fresh eating, juice, jams, tarts, deserts or teas. A trellis system can be used to support the branches.

Blueberry plant

A one year old blueberry plant in a 3L shrub pot
The blueberry plant is an erect, bushy shrub that can be placed in full sun or partly shade. It is cold hardy and can tolerate frost. It grows best in very light, sandy or sandy loam soils which are extremely acidic with a ph level between 4.8 and 5.8 (KCL). A mixture of Sphagnum peat moss, acid compost and sandy soil works well as a growing medium either incorporated into the soil or in 30L or larger containers. The plant will start to produce blueberries after the first winter and continue to produce fruit for more that 15 years. The berries are perfect for eating fresh or for jams, deserts, sauces, smoothies, cakes or juices.
The plant is self-fertile, but it will produce larger berries when cross pollinated with another blueberry plant.

Cranberry plants are low growing, creeping plants of up to 2m long and 40cm high. They are very cold hardy and can tolerate heavy frost. They are easy growing plants and can grow in most soils, but prefer light sandy or sando-loam soils which are very acidic at ph levels between 4.5 and 5.5 (KCl). A mixture of Sphagnum peat moss, acid compost and sandy soil would work well for a growing medium when incorporated in the soil or in a container. They can be grown in a 5L to 10L containers and will be happy on a window shelve. Cranberry plants will bear edible berries in the second year after planting, perfect for juicing, jams, sauces, tarts, deserts, teas or fresh fruit.

The gooseberry is a bushy shrub growing up to approximately 1.5m tall that bears yellowy orange fruit in a papery envelope called a husk. The plant should be placed in full sun, but tolerates partly shade. It is easy to grow and grow in most soils, but prefers loamy soil with a ph between 5.5 and 7.0 (KCl). The plant is self-fertile.
