A sought after and rare garden plant!
Deutzia x hybrida ‘Strawberry Fields’ is a compact, deciduous cultivar with a graceful, arching growth habit. It bears numerous clusters of small flowers that have pale pink centres, flushing to magenta on the outside. The flowers are also sweetly scented. Looks lovely planted as a specimen shrub or in a mixed shrub border, where the flowers can be fully appreciated.
For best results, grow Deutzia x hybrida ‘Strawberry Fields’ in fertile, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun to partial shade. Remove stem tips to encourage bushy growth and cut back flowering stems hard after blooming.
Deutzia ‘Strawberry fields’ is known for attracting bees, beneficial insects, butterflies/moths and other pollinators. It has nectar/pollen rich flowers and provides shelter and habitat.
The Deutzia genus consists of about 60 species of medium-sized flowering shrubs that are mostly native to Asia. Members of this genus are usually deciduous in their native habitats; however, they may be evergreen in tropical climates.
The genus name, Deutzia, is in honor of a Dutch amateur botanist from the 1700s, named Johan van der Deutz.
Deutzias flowers best in partial shade (in South Africa), with a little sunshine. They may be planted in most soil types, but the soil needs to be moist and well-drained. Annual pruning is needed to remove dead branches and is best done immediately after blooming. Keep in mind when pruning that blossoms will appear on old growth.
