⁕ Shepstone Gardens

Open: Sunday: 19 May 2024

Shepstone Gardens are situated at 12 Hope Rd, Mountain View, Johannesburg.

This well known event and wedding venue has open days on the Sunday’s above.

An explorers delight, Shepstone Gardens inspires curiosity. Wander along the stone paths that lead to intriguing spaces. Mountainside indigenous flora meets traditional hedges all beautifully framed by Old World buildings. We especially recommend you follow our yellow pointer boards up the mountain for a beautiful view.

These gardens are a mix of verdant and intriguing concealed spaces. They are theatrical gardens filled with hidden treasures. The owner took  inspiration from 18th century English gardens, especially in terms of the views and different levels. It is about a sense of theatre, about not divulging everything at first glance.

A meander along the gently curving pathway reveals constant notes of surprise. For starters there’s very little lawn, but rather a series of glimpses that defy you not to explore. Cool, dark ponds, towering palms, hidden courtyards – each nook and hideaway demands that you pause a while.

Plant wise, this is a garden of contrast. Lofty ferns are under planted with clivias and at this time of the year the succulents and aloes create a blaze of colour on the sunny inclines.

Tea garden and bar.
