Salix babylonica

(Weeping Willow)

The graceful Weeping Willow is one of the most recognisable and romantic trees in the landscape. With its long, pendulous branches that sweep down to the ground and its fresh green leaves that shimmer in the breeze, Salix babylonica brings beauty, shade and tranquillity to large gardens, parks or waterside plantings.

This fast-growing deciduous tree thrives near dams, rivers, or wetlands, where its roots can access ample moisture. It prefers full sun and deep, fertile soil, and establishes quickly, providing a cooling canopy and a striking silhouette throughout the year. In autumn, its foliage turns soft yellow before falling, creating a picturesque seasonal change.

In South Africa, Salix babylonica is best suited to larger properties with sufficient space and moisture, away from walls, pipes and paving, as its vigorous roots seek out water. Prune occasionally to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches.

A timeless choice for those wanting a serene, waterwise focal point or a dramatic reflection tree beside a dam.
