Compact Elegance in Deep Purple Tones
Rhododendron ‘William Wylam’ is a standout evergreen shrub that delivers deep, velvety colour and year-round structure to your garden. This variety is cherished for its rich purple (dark magenta) blooms, which appear in generous clusters during late autumn to early winter—a time when most gardens are resting. Its petals are slightly rounded. Its bold blooms and neat shape make it an ideal choice for bringing a splash of drama to shaded borders or woodland-style plantings.

Small in Size, Big on Impact
This compact rhododendron grows to around 2 metres tall and 1.5 wide, making it perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or foundation plantings. It’s an excellent low-maintenance option for adding texture and colour beneath trees or along semi-shaded paths. With its rounded form and glossy evergreen leaves, ‘William Wylam’ offers structure and interest even when not in bloom. It also does well in pots.

Minimal Pruning, Maximum Colour
Rhododendrons generally require very little pruning, and ‘William Wylam’ is no exception. Simply deadhead spent flowers after blooming and remove any damaged or wayward branches in late winter. Plant it in acidic, well-draining soil enriched with compost, and keep roots cool and moist with mulch—especially important in hotter South African climates. They don’t like their roots being disturbed. Avoid limy or alkaline conditions for best results. They like frequent feeding and weekly watering.

A Cool-Lover That Thrives in the Right Spot
‘William Wylam’ performs best in cooler, mist-belt or high-altitude gardens in South Africa, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, parts of the Western Cape, and other areas with moist, temperate conditions. It’s happiest in dappled shade or morning sun with protection from harsh midday rays. When planted in the right spot, it rewards with rich colour, tidy form, and reliable winter flowering, making it a prized addition to any garden that values seasonal beauty.
