    Nerine filifolia

A true gem for the late summer and autumn garden, Nerine filifolia is a delicate yet striking bulb prized for its fine, thread-like foliage and sparkling pink blooms. The narrow, grass-like leaves create a soft, airy texture, while slender stems rise above them carrying clusters of starry, lightly ruffled flowers in clear to soft pink tones.

Unlike many larger nerines, this species has a more refined, graceful habit, making it ideal for rock gardens, containers, and the front of sunny borders. The flowers catch the light beautifully and also make charming cut blooms.

    Plant Type: Deciduous bulb
Flower Colour: Soft to clear pink
Flowering Time: Late summer to autumn
    Height: ±30–40 cm
    Position: Full sun
Watering: Moderate during active growth; keep drier during dormancy
Soil: Well-drained soil; thrives in sandy or loamy conditions

Low maintenance and drought tolerant once established, Nerine filifolia rewards gardeners with reliable seasonal colour and elegant texture year after year.

Pelargonium tomentosum — often called peppermint-scented pelargonium — is a charming, soft-leaved plant grown as much for its fragrance as its looks. Its velvety, heart-shaped leaves release a fresh peppermint scent when touched, making it a delight along pathways, patios, or anywhere you can brush past it.

In season, delicate white flowers with subtle markings rise above the foliage, adding gentle beauty without overpowering the plant’s main attraction — its scented leaves. Its spreading, slightly trailing habit makes it ideal for pots, hanging baskets, or as a soft groundcover in sheltered garden spots.

This pelargonium prefers bright light or partial shade and well-drained soil. It is easy to care for, forgiving of occasional neglect, and benefits from light trimming to keep it compact and bushy.

Perfect for both new gardeners wanting a rewarding, low-fuss plant and seasoned growers who appreciate sensory garden plants, peppermint pelargonium adds texture, fragrance, and charm wherever it grows.

Thick, upright green stems form neat clumps, creating an architectural look even when the plant is not in bloom. This plant thrives in bright light with well-drained soil and requires minimal watering, making it well suited to water-wise gardening. It appreciates warmth and protection from frost, and is generally easy to grow with little maintenance.

A one year old blueberry plant in a 3L shrub pot

The blueberry plant is an erect, bushy shrub that can be placed in full sun or partly shade. It is cold hardy and can tolerate frost. It grows best in very light, sandy or sandy loam soils which are extremely acidic with a ph level between 4.8 and 5.8 (KCL). A mixture of Sphagnum peat moss, acid compost and sandy soil works well as a growing medium either incorporated into the soil or in 30L or larger containers. The plant will start to produce blueberries after the first winter and continue to produce fruit for more that 15 years. The berries are perfect for eating fresh or for jams, deserts, sauces, smoothies, cakes or juices.

The plant is self-fertile, but it will produce larger berries when cross pollinated with another blueberry plant.

    Salvia Gesneriifolia (Tequila Sunrise)

Native to the mountainous areas of Mexico, these herbaceous perennial plants or large shrubs are a lovely addition to a garden.

Red flowers with dark maroon (almost black) calyces these plants reach 2-3m high unless pruned to size. These plants flower so regularly that it’s sometimes difficult to know when to prune them back into shape. Don’t prune hard to the ground otherwise you risk losing the plant. Easy to grow shrub that likes some partial or semi shaded position. It needs some regular watering during the hottest summer months.

Cranberry (vaccinium macrocarpon) plant in a 19cm diameter (3L pot)

Cranberry plants are low growing, creeping plants of up to 2m long and 40cm high. They are very cold hardy and can tolerate heavy frost. They are easy growing plants and can grow in most soils, but prefer light sandy or sando-loam soils which are very acidic at ph levels between 4.5 and 5.5 (KCl). A mixture of Sphagnum peat moss, acid compost and sandy soil would work well for a growing medium when incorporated in the soil or in a container. They can be grown in a 5L to 10L containers and will be happy on a window shelve. Cranberry plants will bear edible berries in the second year after planting, perfect for juicing, jams, sauces, tarts, deserts,  teas or fresh fruit.

Hydrangeas also benefit, making their colours more intense and also making certain flowers more blue in colour. The pH of an acidic soil is typically between 4.5 and 6.
