Zantedeschia Aethiopica (Little Gem)
The Zantedeschia, more commonly known as the Arum Lily, is one of the world’s most elegant and recognisable flowering plants. Renowned for its graceful, trumpet-shaped blooms and lush, arrow-shaped foliage, it has become a favourite in gardens, floral arrangements, weddings, and interior décor. Native to southern Africa, Zantedeschia thrives in a wide range of climates and offers exceptional ornamental value throughout its flowering season.
Although often associated with purity and sophistication, Arum Lilies (or Calla Lilies) are remarkably resilient plants that reward gardeners with long-lasting flowers and minimal maintenance. Their timeless beauty and versatility make them equally suited to contemporary landscapes, cottage gardens, water-wise borders, and decorative containers.
Botanical Information;
Botanical Name: Zantedeschia spp.
Common Name: Calla Lily, Arum Lily
Family: Araceae
Plant Type: Herbaceous perennial
Origin: Southern Africa
Mature Height: 30 cm – 1.2 m (depending on species and cultivar)
Flowering Season: Spring through summer, with some varieties flowering into autumn
Appearance
Zantedeschia is admired for its striking floral display. What appears to be a flower is actually a beautifully curved spathe that surrounds a central flower spike known as the spadix. Traditional varieties produce pure white blooms, while modern hybrids are available in an impressive palette of yellow, orange, pink, red, burgundy, lavender, purple, and near-black shades.
The glossy, deep green leaves are broad and arrow-shaped, often decorated with attractive white speckles. Even when not in bloom, the foliage provides lush texture and visual interest, making the plant an excellent feature in both gardens and containers.
Growing Conditions
Calla Lilies perform best in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. They prefer consistently moist conditions during active growth but should not remain waterlogged. A position receiving full sun in cooler climates or partial shade in hotter regions encourages abundant flowering while protecting the foliage from excessive heat.
Regular watering during the growing season promotes vigorous growth and healthy blooms. Once flowering has finished, watering can gradually be reduced as the plant enters its natural dormant period.
Care and Maintenance
Zantedeschia is relatively easy to grow with only routine maintenance required. Removing spent flowers encourages the plant to direct its energy into producing new blooms, while damaged or yellowing leaves should be trimmed away to maintain an attractive appearance.
Applying a balanced fertiliser during spring and throughout the flowering season supports healthy foliage and prolonged blooming. In colder regions where frost occurs, rhizomes may be lifted and stored until temperatures warm again, although many areas with mild winters allow them to remain in the ground year after year.
Landscape Uses;
The graceful form of the Calla Lily makes it an exceptionally versatile landscape plant. It creates stunning displays when planted in groups, along pathways, beside ponds, or in mixed perennial borders. Its elegant flowers also make it an excellent choice for formal gardens, shaded courtyards, and patio containers.
Because of its architectural shape and long-lasting blooms, Zantedeschia is frequently incorporated into wedding gardens, luxury landscapes, and contemporary outdoor spaces where a refined appearance is desired.
