Acanthus Mollis (also known as wild rhubarb, bears breeches)
This plant has lovely large shiny leaves which make an architectural show.
The tall flower spires are ivory white and purple or slightly pink bracts and appear October – November (spring time) and are a long-lasting cut flower that also dries well.
This plant dies back completely in Autumn and during winter, to appear again the following Spring.
Excellent to plant in dry shade. Although if no water is given, the plants also disappear, thus being relatively drought hardy.
Cool sun and light shade. This plant originates from Portugal, Europe.
Ericaceous compost is acidic and is beneficial for plants that like an acid soil. For example camellias, rhododendrons, erica’s etc.
Hydrangeas also benefit, making their colours more intense and also making certain flowers more blue in colour. The pH of an acidic soil is typically between 4.5 and 6.
Whether it be a fine and colourful, very long-blooming perennial for the border or a plant to supply the family florist with some rather good material, this award-winning variety should be worthy of a square yard or two of your garden. Flowering the first year from seed, ‘Cassis’ produces numerous stems of many-flowered heads of dozens of florets of an intense cherry-red colour. (H 60cm)
