This ornamental perennial has deeply cut, beautiful, dark purple black foliage that resembles finely cut lace, giving it an effect similar to that of Japanese maple. It has lemon-scented, pink flowers and dark blackish-red fruits. It likes full sun to partial shade.
It can be planted in the garden (please stay away from buildings and foundations) or as a potted shrub on the patio.
It will tolerate a wide range of soils – but will do good in moist as well as dry soil.
Regular pruning will promote growth of additional leaves and for a bushier plant/shrub/tree.
Historically, its flowers and leaves were used for inflammation, pain, and to induce sweating and urination, while its berries have been used for colds, flu, and as a laxative and diuretic. Current research suggests Sambucus plants contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Elderberry syrup is particularly noted for its potential to alleviate symptoms of colds and flu, and some studies suggest it may help with sinus infections, but more robust clinical trials are needed
