Delicate, romantic and wonderfully easy to grow, Nigella damascena, commonly known as Love-in-a-Mist, is a charming annual that brings a touch of old-fashioned cottage-garden magic to the garden. Its beautiful blue, white or soft pink flowers appear above finely divided, feathery foliage, creating the impression that each bloom is floating in a soft green mist.

After flowering, the plants develop distinctive inflated seed pods, which turn a warm green and eventually dry to a beautiful papery finish. These unusual seed heads are excellent for dried flower arrangements and add interest long after the flowers have faded. Allow a few pods to release their seed and Nigella will readily self-seed, returning naturally in the garden each year.

Nigella is particularly well suited to South African winter and spring gardens, growing best during the cooler months before the heat of summer arrives. Plant in a sunny spot with afternoon shade in well-drained soil and water regularly while establishing. It is wonderfully low-maintenance and needs little feeding. Avoid excessive fertilising, as this can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.

Perfect for cottage gardens, borders, vegetable gardens and informal planting, Nigella also makes an excellent cut flower. Be careful when planting out as it dislikes having its roots disturbed.
