Crassula Ovata

Crassula ovata, algemeen bekend as die Jadeplant of Geldboom, is ’n gewilde vetplant wat inheems is aan Suid-Afrika en Mosambiek. Dit het dik, vleisige, ovaalvormige groen blare en ’n houtagtige stingel, en groei dikwels tot ’n klein struik of boom. Die plant produseer klein, stervormige wit of pienk blomme in die winter of vroeë lente.

Crassula ovata floreer in helder lig, goed dreinerende grond en benodig matige water—die grond moet tussen waterings droog word. Dit is maklik om binnenshuis of buite in gematigde klimate te kweek en word geglo om voorspoed en geluk te bring.

Conophytum bilobum is a small, winter-growing succulent native to the Western and Northern Cape regions of South Africa. It is one of the larger and easier-to-grow species in the genus and is recognized by its two-lobed body shape.

Characteristics:

• Forms pairs of fleshy leaves fused at the base, creating a distinct heart-shaped or two-lobed appearance.
• Bodies are usually green to grey-green and may develop reddish margins in strong light.
• Grows in clusters that gradually form dense mats.
• Produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers in autumn, often larger than the plant body itself.
• During summer dormancy, the old leaves dry into a protective papery sheath.

Cultivation:

• Winter-growing; active from autumn through spring.
• Requires a very well-drained, gritty soil mix.
• Water sparingly during active growth.
• Keep almost completely dry during summer dormancy.
• Prefers bright light and good air circulation.

Ornithogalum is a genus of bulbous flowering plants in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae), native mainly to southern Africa and parts of Europe and western Asia. The group includes many species commonly called “star-of-Bethlehem” due to their star-shaped flowers.

General characteristics:

• Grows from underground bulbs (geophytes).

• Many species are adapted to seasonal rainfall patterns (winter or summer rainfall depending on region).

Cultivation:

• Prefers well-drained soil and full sun.
• Requires a dry dormancy period after flowering when leaves die back.
• Water lightly during active growth; avoid overwatering during dormancy.
• Bulbs can multiply over time, forming clumps.

Notes:

• Some species are highly ornamental, while others are considered invasive outside their native range.
• A few species may be toxic to livestock if ingested.
