8Euphorbia ankarensis is a rare and endangered succulent endemic to the limestone escarpments of the Ankarana region in northwestern Madagascar. This unbranched species is characterized by its cylindrical, pale green stems that can reach up to 1 meter in height and 4 cm in diameter. At the apex, it produces a crown of deciduous leaves that are green above and reddish beneath, often covered with fine white hairs. These leaves are shed at the onset of the dry season, a typical adaptation to its arid habitat.

In spring, the plant produces small, yellow-green to purplish cyathia—modified inflorescences characteristic of the Euphorbia genus. These are surrounded by cyathophylls, which are bract-like structures that aid in attracting pollinators.

E. ankarensis thrives in well-draining, mineral-rich soils and requires a warm environment with temperatures not falling below 12°C. It is sensitive to overwatering, especially during its dormant period in winter, and should be kept dry during this time. The plant prefers full sun but can tolerate moderate shade, though it should be acclimated gradually to direct sunlight to prevent scorch.

Origin & Habitat:
This rare and striking species is native to Northern Madagascar, found exclusively in the Tsingy of Ankarana Reserve — a unique limestone formation. With an extremely limited distribution (just 7.8 km²), it is not known to occur anywhere else in the world.

Habitat & Ecology:
Euphorbia pachypodioides thrives on steep, rocky limestone cliffs where thousands of these plants grow in a tightly restricted ecosystem. It shares its habitat with several other rare species, including Euphorbia aureoviridiflora, Euphorbia herman-schwarzii, Euphorbia viguieri, and Euphorbia neohumbertii. The taller Euphorbia tirucalli can also be found in this area.
