Description:
Viburnum opulus is an attractive, medium-to-large deciduous shrub prized in gardens for its large, snowball-like clusters of white flowers in spring. Its striking blooms, reminiscent of hydrangea balls, are made up of numerous creamy-white petals that create a dramatic display at the branch tips. After flowering, the foliage often turns rich shades of orange or red in autumn, adding seasonal interest to borders and mixed shrub beds.
Size:
Typically grows to around 3–4 m tall and wide with a rounded, arching form that makes it a great specimen plant or flowering focal point in the garden.
Growing conditions:
• Sunlight: Full sun or light shade
• Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil — tolerant of a wide range of types
• Watering: Moderate; consistent moisture helps promote blooms. Drought hardy once established.
• Hardiness: Generally hardy once established
Care:
Prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth. Thinning older stems can improve air circulation and flowering potential. Viburnum is generally low-maintenance, but can be susceptible to occasional pests like aphids, so inspect regularly.
Landscape use:
• Feature shrub in mixed borders
• Specimen plant for spring flower display
• Low informal hedges or screening
Highlights:
• Iconic snowball-like blooms in late spring
• Multiple seasons of interest: flowers, colourful autumn foliage
• Excellent for adding structural form and garden drama
