Muhlenbergia capillaris – Pink Muhly Grass
Create a breathtaking display in your garden with Muhlenbergia capillaris, also known as Pink Muhly Grass. This ornamental grass forms a neat, upright clump of fine green foliage, topped in late summer and autumn by airy clouds of pink, mist-like flower plumes. When the sun shines through them, the entire plant seems to glow, creating a spectacular show that lasts for weeks.
Growing Conditions
Pink Muhly Grass thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is heat and drought tolerant once established, making it a good choice for South African water-wise gardens. It adapts well to different soils, provided they are not waterlogged, and performs best in sunny, open positions where its flower plumes can be fully appreciated.
Planting & Care
Plant in groups or drifts for maximum effect, spacing clumps about 60–90 cm apart. Water regularly until established, then only during prolonged dry spells. Cut back old foliage in late winter before new growth emerges to keep the plant looking fresh. A light application of fertiliser in spring will encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
Landscape Uses
Perfect for mass planting, borders, gravel gardens, and naturalistic landscapes. Muhlenbergia capillaris also pairs beautifully with other grasses and perennials, providing movement, texture, and seasonal colour. Its soft plumes can also be cut for floral arrangements, bringing a touch of airy elegance indoors.
