Cistus × purpureus, also known as Purple Rock Rose or Orchid Rock Rose, is a beautiful evergreen shrub combining delicate flowers, attractive foliage and excellent resilience. Its naturally rounded, bushy form makes it ideal for Mediterranean-style and water-wise gardens.
In summer, it produces large, crinkled pink-purple flowers, each marked with a distinctive deep red blotch at the base. The flowers can reach around 8 cm across and, although each lasts only a day, they are produced successively for a spectacular display.
The narrow, slightly wavy grey-green foliage remains attractive year-round and has an aromatic quality when bruised. The plant typically grows to around 0.5–1 m in height and spread, making it suitable for borders, rockeries, slopes and containers.
Cistus × purpureus thrives in full sun and well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and copes well with sandy, rocky and coastal conditions. Its flowers are also attractive to pollinating insects, and the plant has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Very little maintenance is needed. A light trim after flowering can maintain a compact shape, but hard pruning into old wood should be avoided.
A superb choice for sunny South African gardens, Purple Rock Rose combines beautiful pink-purple flowers with evergreen foliage, drought tolerance and easy-care performance.
