Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ – Silver Foliage with Timeless Appeal
Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ is a striking evergreen perennial prized for its soft, silvery-grey, finely divided foliage and graceful, rounded form. Grown primarily for its foliage rather than its small, insignificant flowers, it brings texture, movement and an elegant silver accent to the garden.
The aromatic leaves are deeply divided and covered in fine hairs, giving them a beautiful, almost shimmering appearance. Their silver colouring provides an excellent contrast to green foliage and works particularly well alongside pink, purple, red and blue flowers.
Forming a bushy mound around 60–90 cm tall and wide, ‘Powis Castle’ is ideal for borders, rockeries, containers, mass planting and soft edging. It is particularly effective in Mediterranean-style and water-wise gardens.
This is a tough, drought-tolerant plant that thrives in full sun and very well-drained soil. Avoid consistently wet conditions, which can cause root problems. Occasional pruning helps maintain its compact shape and encourages fresh growth.
It won the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 1993 for its reliable garden performance, striking foliage contrast, and structural form.
With its versatile silver foliage, aromatic character and excellent drought tolerance, Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ is an easy-care plant that adds year-round structure and sophistication to sunny gardens.
