Abutilon megapotamicum
Bring a touch of charm and colour to your garden with Abutilon megapotamicum, also known as the Trailing or Chinese Lantern Abutilon. This graceful shrub produces a profusion of dangling, lantern-like flowers — bright yellow petals peeking from deep red calyces — from spring right through to autumn. Its blooms seem to dance among the leaves, attracting bees and butterflies with their nectar-rich appeal.
This semi-evergreen shrub has slender, arching stems and small heart-shaped leaves, creating a soft, informal look perfect for cottage gardens, trellises, or decorative pots. It’s equally striking when trained up a support or allowed to trail gently over walls and containers.
Planting & Care
Choose a sunny to semi-shaded spot with well-drained, compost-rich soil. Water regularly during dry periods to keep the soil evenly moist, but do not allow it to become waterlogged. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and midsummer to encourage continuous flowering and healthy growth.
Pruning & Maintenance
Lightly prune after the main flowering flush to maintain shape and encourage new shoots. In late winter, a harder cutback can rejuvenate older plants. Protect from heavy frost in very cold regions, or grow in containers that can be moved to a sheltered position.
