Hibiscus Schizopetalus’ is a species of Hibiscus native to tropical eastern Africa in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. Its common names include fringed rosemallow, Japanese lantern, coral hibiscus, and spider hibiscus.
This is a unique, tropical-flair shrub that produces exotic, pendulous blooms from spring through late autumn. The long, finely cut petals curve backward in a delicate fringe, revealing a long, protruding staminal column for a truly dramatic effect. Usually bright red to orange-red, the blooms dangle elegantly from slender stems, swaying in the breeze like living ornaments.
Thriving in sun to half-shade and well-drained soil, it appreciates regular watering during hot, dry spells and benefits from feeding with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season to keep flowers coming. Plant it in a sheltered spot to protect its gracefully arching branches from strong winds, or grow it in a large container to showcase its unique blooms up close.
Reaching 2–3 metres in height, Hibiscus schizopetalus has a loose, arching growth habit, making it ideal for tropical-style gardens, mixed borders, or as a feature plant against a wall or fence. Its elegant, lacy blooms also attract pollinators, bringing added life and movement to your garden. Light pruning after flowering will maintain a tidy shape and encourage fresh growth for the next flush of flowers.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, Hibiscus schizopetalus has been valued in traditional herbal practices. In some cultures, its flowers are used in soothing teas believed to aid digestion and support cardiovascular health, while leaf infusions have been applied topically for their cooling and softening properties. With its long flowering season, unusual fringed blooms, and gentle herbal benefits, the Spider Hibiscus is a captivating and versatile choice for gardeners wanting something truly distinctive.
