Melaleuca armillaris - Tea Tree Plant

Rare to find.
A quick growing evergreen tree or shrub growing up to 7m tall. It has fine, thinly pointed green leaves and its flowers are white fluffy bottlebrush-like and appear in summer.

This incredibly powerful medicinal plant has a lovely scent when the leaves are touched/crushed - the tea tree oil smell.

The trees grow well in coastal conditions but can also withstand light frosts. Fresh sprigs rubbed onto windowsills and kitchen counters help control flies and mosquitoes. It will thrive in any soil but it needs full sun and a deeply dug and well-composted hole in which to get established. The secret is to cut it back to quite harshly every two or three years, to keep it vigorous, tidy and attractive.

The Tea tree is native to N Australia, S New Guinea and the Moluccas. · It is a hardy, medium-sized tree with papery bark, in several layers.

Medicinal Uses.

An easy-to-make lotion of leaves, sprigs and pieces of bark is a superb wash or spray for bites, rashes, scratches, heat rash, itchiness, fungal infections, acne and oily skin, and can be used as a rinse for oily hair and athlete’s foot.

Camomile or Chamomile (Matricaria Chamomilla)

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), also known as German Chamomile, is a delightful flowering herb celebrated for its daisy-like blooms, sweet apple-like fragrance, and remarkable versatility. Long treasured in gardens and traditional herbal practices, Chamomile is valued not only for its ornamental beauty but also for its soothing qualities. Its delicate white petals surrounding bright yellow centres create a cheerful display from late spring through summer, making it an attractive addition to herb gardens, cottage gardens, borders, and containers.

Native to Europe and Western Asia, Chamomile is now cultivated around the world for its flowers, which are commonly harvested and dried for herbal teas, potpourri, and natural skincare products. Its ease of cultivation and ability to attract beneficial insects make it a favourite among both home gardeners and commercial growers.

Appearance

Chamomile is a fast-growing annual herb with finely divided, feathery green foliage that gives the plant a soft, airy appearance. Slender stems support masses of small, daisy-like flowers measuring approximately 2–3 cm across. Each bloom consists of crisp white petals surrounding a vibrant golden-yellow centre, releasing a pleasant, fruity fragrance when gently brushed or harvested.

The profusion of flowers creates a light and elegant display that complements a wide variety of flowering plants.

Growing Conditions

Chamomile thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It tolerates a range of soil types provided drainage is good and is relatively drought tolerant once established. Regular watering during prolonged dry periods encourages continuous flowering, while avoiding waterlogged soil helps maintain healthy roots.

This easy-care herb readily self-seeds under favourable conditions, providing fresh plants for future growing seasons.

Garden Uses

Chamomile is an excellent choice for herb gardens, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and mixed flower borders. Its compact growth habit also makes it suitable for containers, window boxes, and raised beds. The fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other beneficial pollinators, contributing to a healthy and biodiverse garden.

Fresh or dried flowers are widely used for herbal infusions, floral crafts, sachets, and potpourri, while the attractive blooms also make charming additions to fresh flower arrangements.

Benefits of Chamomile

Produces masses of charming daisy-like flowers.

Emits a pleasant, sweet apple-like fragrance.

Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.

Ideal for herb gardens, cottage gardens, and containers.

Flowers can be harvested for herbal teas and potpourri.

Easy to grow and suitable for beginner gardeners.

Readily self-seeds for continuous seasonal displays.

Care Tips

Sow Chamomile in a sunny position after the last frost or during the appropriate planting season for your region. Keep the soil lightly moist during germination, then water moderately once established. Regular harvesting of the flowers encourages additional blooming throughout the growing season.

Deadheading spent flowers helps prolong flowering, while allowing a few blooms to mature will encourage natural self-seeding for future displays. An occasional application of compost is generally sufficient to support healthy growth, as Chamomile performs best without excessive fertilisation.

Tulbaghia Fragrans (Sweet Wild Garlic Flower)

Tulbaghia fragrans, commonly known as Sweet Wild Garlic, is a graceful, evergreen perennial prized for its fragrant flowers, neat clump-forming habit, and remarkable versatility in the garden. Native to southern Africa, this resilient plant belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and has become a favourite among gardeners seeking a low-maintenance ornamental that provides months of colour and attracts beneficial pollinators.

Unlike many members of the Tulbaghia genus, Tulbaghia fragrans is particularly valued for its pleasantly sweet-scented blooms, which create an inviting atmosphere in the garden while adding elegance to borders, pathways, rockeries, and containers.

Appearance and Growth Habit

Tulbaghia fragrans forms dense clumps of narrow, strap-like green leaves that remain attractive throughout much of the year in mild climates. The foliage provides an appealing architectural texture and gently sways in the breeze, softening garden landscapes.

From late spring through autumn, slender flower stems rise above the foliage, carrying clusters of delicate star-shaped blossoms in shades of soft lavender, pale mauve, or lilac. The flowers emit a delightful, sweet fragrance, making them especially attractive when planted near patios, entrances, or walkways where their scent can be appreciated.

Typically reaching a height of 30–50 cm, this compact perennial spreads gradually, making it an excellent choice for mass planting without becoming invasive.

Care and Maintenance

One of the greatest advantages of Tulbaghia fragrans is its ease of care. Removing spent flower stems encourages continuous blooming throughout the growing season and helps maintain a tidy appearance.

Clumps may be divided every few years to rejuvenate older plants, encourage stronger flowering, and produce additional plants for other areas of the garden.

An annual application of compost or a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring promotes healthy foliage and abundant blooms. The plant generally remains pest and disease resistant, making it an excellent choice for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.

Landscape Uses

The versatility of Tulbaghia fragrans allows it to be incorporated into many different garden styles. Its compact growth habit and long flowering period make it ideal for:

Mixed perennial borders

Indigenous and water-wise gardens

Cottage gardens

Rock gardens

Pathway edging

Patio containers

Pollinator gardens

Commercial landscapes

Public gardens

Mass plantings

Its graceful flowers combine beautifully with ornamental grasses, salvias, agapanthus, lavender, and other sun-loving perennials.

Benefits of Tulbaghia fragrans

Tulbaghia fragrans offers numerous advantages for both residential and commercial landscapes:

Long flowering season from spring to autumn

Delightfully fragrant flowers

Attractive evergreen foliage

Excellent drought tolerance once established

Low maintenance requirements

Ideal for water-wise gardens

Suitable for borders, containers, and mass planting

Attracts bees and butterflies

Generally resistant to pests and diseases

Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions

Suitable for coastal gardens

Excellent edging plant

Easy to divide and propagate

Catnip, also sometimes known as catmint, is a hardy, aromatic perennial herb belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, it has become naturalised in many regions around the world, including South Africa. It is well known for its soft grey-green foliage and its irresistible attraction to cats, caused by the natural compound nepetalactone found in the leaves and stems.

Growing in an upright, bushy form, Catnip produces heart-shaped to oval leaves with softly serrated edges and a velvety texture. From late spring through summer, it bears delicate spikes of small tubular flowers in shades of white to pale pink/purple, often marked with subtle purple speckles. These airy blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Nepeta cataria is drought tolerant once established and requires only moderate watering. Regular trimming after flowering encourages compact growth and repeat blooming throughout the warmer months. It performs well in herb gardens, cottage gardens, containers, and mixed perennial borders.

Typically reaching a height of 60–100 cm, Catnip has a relaxed, slightly spreading habit that adds softness and movement to garden spaces.
