Growing in South Africa: Astilbes prefer cool roots, rich soil and reliable moisture, making them best suited to cooler parts of the country and sheltered, shaded gardens. In the Western Cape, they need protection from hot afternoon sun and regular watering throughout the dry summer months. Incorporate plenty of compost into the soil and apply mulch to help retain moisture. They can also be grown successfully in containers, provided they are kept cool and well watered.

Garden tip: Remove spent flower plumes to keep plants looking tidy. Divide established clumps every three to four years in autumn or early spring to maintain vigour and encourage better flowering.

This lovely perennial needs a cool, shady spot and deep, rich, moist soil. Its fern-like foliage is attractive from spring through summer.

🌱 Soil pH: Adaptable; slightly acidic to neutral, approximately pH 5.5–7

Growing in South Africa: Deutzia scabra grows best in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost. In summer-rainfall regions it is generally easy to maintain, while in the Western Cape it will benefit from regular deep watering during the dry summer months. A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool. It is a good choice for gardens with cold winters, as it is deciduous and naturally loses its leaves during the dormant season.

Garden tip: Deutzia flowers on the previous season’s growth, so prune immediately after flowering. Remove a few of the oldest stems at ground level every few years to encourage fresh growth and maintain a healthy, floriferous shrub.

Achillea millefolium ‘Cassis’ is a striking flowering perennial admired for its rich cherry-red flowers, delicate fern-like foliage, and upright growth habit. Its clusters of small, white-centred, deep cherry-red flowers create a bold display from summer into autumn, adding vibrant colour and texture to garden borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds. As the flowers mature, their colour may soften, creating subtle variations that add depth and interest to the garden.
yarrow ‘Cassis’

Highly valued by gardeners and cut-flower growers, ‘Cassis’ is an excellent choice for adding dramatic colour to ornamental gardens and floral arrangements. Its flat-topped flower clusters are held on sturdy, branching stems above attractive green foliage, creating a natural, relaxed appearance. The rich red blooms contrast beautifully with white flowers, purple salvias, blue veronicas, and ornamental grasses, making this variety a versatile addition to a wide range of planting schemes. Its flowers can also be used in fresh bouquets and dried arrangements, bringing a distinctive splash of colour to floral displays.
NC State Extension

Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Achillea ‘Cassis’ is a hardy, relatively low-maintenance perennial that tolerates dry conditions once established. It grows well in a range of soil types, including sandy and moderately fertile soils, provided excess water drains freely. Regular watering during establishment encourages healthy root development, while moderate watering thereafter helps maintain vigorous growth. Removing faded flower heads can encourage further flowering and keep the plant looking neat throughout the growing season.
yarrow ‘Cassis’

Growing to approximately 45–75 cm in height, ‘Cassis’ forms an attractive clump of finely divided foliage with upright flowering stems. It is well suited to sunny perennial borders, mass plantings, cutting gardens, and naturalistic landscapes. Its deep red flowers provide a beautiful contrast against lighter-coloured plants, while the delicate foliage adds softness and texture. Allow sufficient space for the plant to develop, as yarrow can spread gradually through its roots.
yarrow ‘Cassis’

Easy to grow and rewarding throughout the warmer months, Achillea ‘Cassis’ is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking bold colour, attractive foliage, and reliable seasonal interest. Whether planted in groups for a dramatic display or combined with softer pastel flowers in a mixed border, its rich cherry-red blooms bring warmth, character, and natural beauty to outdoor spaces.

Growing Tips

Light: Plant in full sun to encourage strong growth and abundant flowering. A sunny position with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal.

Soil: Grow in well-drained soil. Achillea tolerates a range of soil types, including sandy and relatively poor soils, but does not perform well in persistently waterlogged conditions.

Watering: Water regularly while the plant establishes. Once established, it tolerates dry periods and generally requires less frequent watering. Avoid overwatering, particularly in heavy soils.

Spacing: Allow approximately 30–45 cm between plants, adjusting the spacing according to the desired planting density and growing conditions.

Feeding: Apply compost or a light, balanced fertiliser in spring if necessary. Avoid excessive feeding, as overly rich soil may encourage weak growth.

Deadheading: Remove faded flower heads to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage further flowering.

Pruning: Cut back spent flowering stems after blooming to encourage fresh growth and maintain a neat shape. Remove old foliage in late winter or early spring.

Dividing: Divide established clumps in spring or autumn where conditions are suitable to maintain plant vigour and manage spreading.

Support: The stems are generally sturdy, but plants growing in exposed or windy positions may benefit from light support.

Cut Flowers: Harvest flower stems when most of the flower clusters are open. For dried arrangements, hang the stems in a dry, well-ventilated space away from direct sunlight to help preserve their colour.

Achillea ptarmica ‘Double Diamond’ is an elegant flowering perennial admired for its masses of pure white, double pompom-like flowers and attractive dark green foliage. Its delicate blooms appear in generous clusters from summer into autumn, creating a fresh, bright display that brings beauty and sophistication to garden borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds. The densely layered petals give each flower a soft, rounded appearance, making this variety a distinctive choice for gardeners seeking a refined white flowering plant.

Highly valued for its abundant blooms and versatility, ‘Double Diamond’ is an excellent addition to ornamental gardens and cutting gardens alike. Its upright stems and clusters of crisp white flowers contrast beautifully with colourful perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs. The blooms are also well suited to fresh-cut flower arrangements, where their classic white colour complements both soft pastel shades and bold, vibrant tones.

Thriving in sunny positions and well-drained soil, Achillea ‘Double Diamond’ is a hardy, easy-to-grow perennial that performs well with relatively little maintenance. It prefers soil that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely. Regular watering during establishment encourages healthy root development, while moderate watering thereafter helps maintain vigorous growth. Removing faded flowers can encourage further blooming and keep the plant looking neat throughout the flowering season.

Growing to approximately 60–80 cm in height, with a spreading, clump-forming habit, this variety is ideal for perennial borders, mass plantings, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens. Its fine white flower clusters create a light, airy effect when planted in groups, while the dark green foliage provides an attractive backdrop for the blooms. It pairs particularly well with purple salvias, pink echinaceas, blue veronicas, and ornamental grasses, making it a versatile choice for a variety of garden designs.

Easy to grow and rewarding throughout the warmer months, Achillea ‘Double Diamond’ is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking long-lasting white flowers, attractive foliage, and reliable seasonal interest. Whether used as a soft focal point in a mixed border or planted in groups for a striking white display, this beautiful perennial brings freshness, elegance, and natural charm to any outdoor space.

Spacing: Allow approximately 40–60 cm between plants to accommodate mature growth and encourage good air circulation.

Feeding: Incorporate compost into the soil before planting. Apply a light, balanced fertiliser in spring if needed, avoiding excessive feeding that may encourage weak growth.

Deadheading: Remove faded flower heads regularly to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage further flowering.

Pruning: Cut back untidy or spent stems after flowering. Remove old foliage in spring to make room for fresh growth.

Dividing: Divide established clumps in spring to maintain plant vigour and control spreading.

Pest and Disease Care: Monitor for aphids and powdery mildew, particularly when plants are crowded or air circulation is poor. Provide adequate spacing and avoid excessive watering over the foliage.

Cut Flowers: Harvest stems when the flowers are fully open for attractive fresh arrangements. Regular harvesting can also help encourage additional flowering.

Its flat-topped blooms create a beautiful display of colour from early summer into autumn, bringing a natural charm and soft texture to garden borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds. The rich pink flowers gradually fade to softer shades as they mature, adding depth and changing colour to the garden throughout the flowering season.

Removing faded flowers encourages further blooming and helps keep the plant looking neat and attractive.
